Where is Chaveneau?
Chaveneau is located in the extreme southwest region of
Haiti about a 4.5 hour drive (125 miles west) from the capital city of
Port au Prince. It is a remote farming community about 30 minutes drive
from Les Cayes and a few miles from Chantal- both in the region of Sud.
Les Cayes is the nearest metropolitan area with a population of about
70,000 people. It is a costal city and a large exporter of coffee and
sugar cane. There is a small airport and hospital in Les Cayes and would
be the closest town for these things.
In order to get to the location of the church/school one must sometimes park their vehicle in Chantal and hike about 2 to 3 miles by foot. This involves crossing/wading through two rivers. Though the rivers are not wide, they are about thigh-high deep on an average adult and one is quite swift. If the water is low enough an SUV can drive through the rivers making the trip to Chaveneau a bit easier (therefore getting supplies in to the church is much more efficient during the dry season). We also have been driving out luggage in for trips the more trips we take there. It is a beautiful, mountainous area- filled with lush vegetation. There are many farms and farm animals and most people are self-sufficient though malnourished.
